Europe Indefinitely Delays Launch of ETIAS Requirement

Europe has indefinitely postponed the launch of ETIAS, a travel requirement for visa-exempt visitors. ETIAS stands for European Travel Information and Authorization System. It's an upcoming electronic travel authorization requirement for visitors from visa-exempt countries who travel to Europe for short stays. It allows you to stay for up to 90 days within any 180 day period. Once launched, it would link to your passport and last for three years or until your passport expires. The purpose of it is to screen visa-free travelers beforehand to improve border security.
The European Union first proposed and approved the ETIAS in 2016 and they had an original target launch for it to be operational in 2021. It was ultimately postponed and they have had several projected launch dates since then. Well, it's 2026 and it still hasn't launched and it appears that they have now indefinitely delayed it. The other projected launch releases were 2022, 2023/2024, 2025, and even as recently as late 2026 which was recently removed from official tracking. It's current status shows no fixed launch date but it has an expected delayed rollout in 2027 pending further scheduling updates from eu-LISA, which is the agency managing the technology.
For now, if you have any travel plans to Europe in 2026, you will no longer need to worry about applying for ETIAS.
